Floriade, held annually in Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, is Australia’s biggest celebration of spring. Featuring over one million blooming bulbs integrated into intricate garden bed designs, the festival serves as a vast, living horticulture and biodiversity laboratory.

Alongside the floral displays, Floriade’s dedicated family-friendly workshops and discovery stages transform the parklands into an interactive environmental learning centre. Children can create their own floral bookmarks, learn about soil health and crop growth, plant seedling pots, and discover companion planting.

Science (Biological Sciences) Curriculum Focus: Living things have basic needs, distinct external features, and grow through recognizable lifecycles. ACT Learning Outcome: The student observes and identifies the physical features of flowering plants (roots, bulbs, stems, leaves, flowers) and describes their environmental needs (sunlight, soil, water). The student explores the relationship between flowers and pollinators, identifying common garden insects (bees, butterflies) and understanding their role in plant reproduction. Curriculum Focus: Exploring how plants and animals are grown for food, shelter, and community environments. ACT Learning Outcome: The student participates in a practical planting activity (e.g., seed potting, seed balls), demonstrating care for living things and understanding the sequence of actions required to grow plants from seed or bulb.
