The Everlasting Kings Park Festival is an annual botanical showcase held at the Western Australian Botanic Garden within Kings Park, Perth. Celebrating the sheer diversity of Western Australia’s native flora—one of the world’s recognised biodiversity hotspots—the festival showcases millions of cultivated everlastings alongside rare, endemic wildflower species from across the state. Students analyse how leaf structures (e.g., waxy coatings, fine hairs) minimise water loss in nutrient-poor soils and arid environments, and examine specialist pollination partnerships with native birds and insects. Seed Dispersal, Germination, and Bushfire Regeneration: Learning Outcome: Investigate how fire and smoke chemicals (such as karrikins) trigger seed germination in Australian native species, demonstrating the cyclical nature of Mediterranean-climate ecosystems. Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS / History & Geography) First Nations Ecological Knowledge (Noongar Boodja): Learning Outcome: Explore how the Whadjuk Noongar people read seasonal signals (Djilba and Kambarang seasons) through plant flowering cycles, and investigate traditional uses of native flora for food, medicine, fibre, and tools. Protecting Significant Environments: Learning Outcome: Examine how urban botanic gardens and conservation organisations preserve endangered flora through seed banking, tissue culture, and scientific research.
