Stage 1 (Years 1-2)

The “Dinosaurs: Feathers, teeth and claws” program is an educator-led, hands-on workshop designed for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students (Kindergarten to Year 1). During this 45-minute session, students explore real fossils from the museum’s paleontology collection and investigate the physical features of dinosaurs, including feathers, teeth, and claws.

Through engaging, interactive activities, children learn how scientists study trace and body fossils to understand the biology, behavior, and environments of prehistoric animals. They compare these ancient creatures with modern animals, developing an understanding of evolutionary links and adaptations.

The program encourages observation, classification, and critical thinking, while fostering collaboration and inquiry-based learning. It is aligned with the NSW Science & Technology syllabus for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, supporting skills such as exploring characteristics of living things, observing and collecting data, and communicating scientific ideas.

Sessions are held in the museum’s dedicated learning space, Burra, and can accommodate up to 30 students. Teachers and homeschool groups can schedule bookings during school terms with at least 14 days’ notice. The program provides a rich, hands-on experience that brings dinosaurs to life while linking directly to curriculum outcomes
